Multi-talented keyboardist and writer Brian Charette will be my guest on Jazz Video Guy Live on Friday. Brian writes: I’m a Hammond and IK Multimedia endorsed, Steeplechase and Positone recording artist, a regular in the top 10 of the Downbeat Critic’s Poll, The 2014 Downbeat Rising Star, and 2015 Best Organist in NYC from Hothouse Magazine. I also play with many well known jazz artists like NEA master George Coleman and pop icons like Chaka Khan.
I describe the first album, “Like the Sun” as Kraftwerk meets Harlem juke joint. It’s Hammond with electronics and drum machines that I have programmed to react to me in provocative ways. I track everything live. Here is me tracking Track 2 my fave, “Time Piece”:
I recorded “Like the Sun” in the first months of lock down. The release date is Dec 1, 2020. The music is original catchy instrumental tunes with hip beats, memorable melodies, slick chords, and dreamy atmospheres. The heart of the music is the Hammond Organ which, I think, is compelling because it is rarely seen in this robotic context. The pieces on the album speak of isolation, finding my lovely wife, and the terrible anxiety of losing my concerts because of the virus.
