New Century Saxophone Quartet (16:30, Friday 13 July, Buchanan Theatre) Michael Stephenson — Soprano Saxophone; Chris Hemingway — Alto Saxophone Stephen Pollock — Tenor Saxophone; Drew Hays — Baritone Saxophone The only ensemble of its kind ever to win First Prize at the Concert Artists Guild Competition in New York City, the New Century Saxophone Quartet is a pioneering and versatile group which is winning new-found enthusiasm for the diverse repertory of the saxophone quartet. They have performed in many unusual settings during their twenty year history, including two command performances for President Clinton in the White House and a concerto performance with the United States Navy Band. New Century has been heard on radio, television, and in major concert venues in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Central America. The quartet’s recordings have won critical acclaim and have been featured on NPR’s Weekend Edition. They have been the recipients of numerous grants from organizations such as the National Endowment for the Arts and The Aaron Copland Recording Fund. New Century’s latest project features works inspired by folk music from around the world.
