Bennie Maupin heard Miles Davis’ “Paper Moon” on a jukebox in high school and discovered Sonny Rollins. A friend introduced him to Tenor Madness and that’s when his interest in Sonny piqued. He first heard Sonny live in the early 60s when he came to town with a band that included Don Cherry, Bob Cranshaw and Billy Higgins. About artist Prophet Jennings show with Sonny where Bennie, age 20, played in the group that opening for Sonny. Afterwards he met Sonny and that was the start of a lifelong friendship. He also discusses the first time Sonny mentored him and how it changed his life.
