Darius Milhaud (1892 – 1974) was a French composer, conductor, and teacher who is well known for being a member of Les Six. His compositional output is strongly influenced by jazz and Brazilian music. Scaramouche was originally written for two pianos and is comprised of themes from music Milhaud wrote for musical theater performed by the Theatre Scaramouche Company. The outer movements of Scaramouche are based on material from “Le médecin volant” while the second movement is based on material from “Bolivar.”
The piece is composed in three movements:
I. Vif
II. Modéré
III. Brazileira
