    In the whirlwind of matter are hidden "strange attractors", which suddenly give an unexpected direction to the seeming chaos (clouds, the wind, all the natural phenomena far from equilibrium). The saxophone expresses a voluble, expressive matter, in volutes and ornaments. My attractors are homorhythmic passages, unisons and phrasings in arpeggios. The quartet as a single man and suddenly polyphonic. Far from equilibrium, like tightrope walkers on the wire, these four phenomena invented by Mr Sax also recall music-hall attractions that have coloured their history (jazz, of course, but not solely). Attractions is praise I address to the saxophone, which has always attracted me.

  • Bach: Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ · BWV 639 / Arcis Saxophon Quartett

    Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ - BWV 639

    1. Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, ich bitt, erhör mein Klagen;
    verleih mir Gnad zu dieser Frist, laß mich doch nicht verzagen.

    Den rechten Glauben, Herr, ich mein, den wollest du mir geben,
    dir zu leben, meim Nächsten nütz zu sein,
    dein Wort zu halten eben

  • Exodus - RE/SONO Saxophone Quartet

    - Matias Couriel (1986): Aljamia  (0:16)
    - Sergio Nunez Meneses (1989): Voix perdues qui rament  (6:40)
    - Mathias Berthod (1987): Aube (13:05)

    In 2011 a terrible conflict emerged in Syria, which set the Middle East on fire.  Thousands of people had to flee their homes, in a quest to rebuild their lives in other countries,  with a long and dangerous journey, a modern exodus.
    With the desire to pay homage to these courageous men, women, and children, RE/SONO commissioned a three-part piece by three young composers, Exodus.      It is the result of a collective work between the saxophone quartet and the composers;
    Matías Couriel (Argentina), Sergio Núñez Meneses (Chili) and Mathias Berthod (France).
    Each composer deals with a different aspect of this exodus : The war, Crossing the sea and The exile.
    All three of the composers have constructed their musical syntax from the maqâm,
    the traditional Arabic modal scale system, though treated differently three times with each composer’s personal style.

    Performers: Mark Michalak - soprano saxophone, Michael Morimoto - soprano saxophone, Holly DeCaigny - tenor saxophone, Tommy Davis - tenor saxophone

    Composer's description:

    In March of 2001, the Taliban destroyed two giant 1500 year old Buddha statues in the province of Bamian in Afghanistan despite many protests from the international community. Although the statues have disappeared, the silhouettes and shadows of the Buddhas can still be seen in the rock face of the mountains. The Taliban destroyed the statues, but the shadows in the stone are perhaps more powerful than anything else now. In this sense, the Afghan religious extremists did not succeed in destroying the Buddhas.

    En mars 2001, les Talibans ont détruit, malgré les nombreuses pressions internationales, les deux bouddhas géants vieux de 1500 ans dans la province de Bamiyan en Afghanistan. Mais, même si ces statuts sont maintenant disparus, on peut voir dans la pierre des montagnes des silhouettes, des ombres, de ceux-ci. Même si les Talibans ont détruit les statuts, les ombres laissées dans la pierre sont peut-être plus puissantes que toute autre chose maintenant. En ce sens, les extrémistes religieux afgants n'ont pas réussi à détruire les bouddhas.
