Kohei Ueno started to play the saxophone in a school band at the age of eight.
He graduated from the Department of Instrumental Music, Tokyo
University of the Arts.
He has studied under Nobuya Sugawa, Nami Tsurukai and Hiroshi Hara.
He was the youngest saxophonist to win the 1st prize at the 28th Japan
Wind and Percussion Competition, being honored with other special
awards granted by the Prime Minister, the Minister of Education,
Culture, Sports,Science and Technology, and the Governor of Tokyo.
When he won the 2nd prize at the 6th Adolphe Sax International
Competition in Dinant, Belgium in November, 2014, the news traveled
fast via the local media, causing quite a stir in Japan.
He participated in the 16th World Saxophone Congress in Scotland as a
soloist, and performed “Dance of Uzume”, a challenging piece by Piet
Swerts with the Royal Northern College of Music Wind Band, winning the
highest praise from the doyens of the world.
He was invited to “Recital Nova”, an NHK FM radio program, and the TV
Asahi’s“Untitled Concert”, where he performed Martin’s “Ballade for
Saxophone and Orchestra” with The Yokohama Sinfonietta conducted by
Kazuki Yamada. He has worked with such ensembles as the Japan
Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Northern College Wind Band, and the
Yokohama Sinfonietta.
He plays the soprano saxophone in the Rev Saxophone Quartet, and is
the concertmaster of the Panda Wind Orchestra.
