The Asia Pacific Saxophone Academy first launches the “1st Asia Pacific Saxophone Composition Competition” to encourage composers to write quality works for the saxophone.

The winning work of each category will be performed by members of the Amigo Saxophone Quartet and the Kasetsart University Wind Ensemble in the Gala concert of the Asia Pacific Saxophone Academy 2015.

The two categories of the competition are:

Category A:

A concerto for solo saxophone (either soprano or alto or both by one soloist) and wind ensemble.

Exact available instrumentation of the wind ensemble:

Piccolo; 1st & 2nd Flute;

E-flat Clarinet; 1st, 2nd & 3rd Clarinet; B-flat Bass Clarinet;


1st & 2nd Alto Sax; Tenor Sax; Baritone Sax;

1st, 2nd & 3rd B-flat Trumpet;

1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th French Horn in F;

1st & 2nd Trombone; Bass Trombone;

Euphonium; Tuba;

Timpani (4 drums); and 5 Percussionists.

Duration of the work: 8-10 minutes

 Category B:

A work for saxophone quartet (soprano, alto, tenor and baritone).

Duration of the work: 5-8 minutes


A panel of distinguished International jury members includes:

·       Mr. Kitti Emmyz Kuremanee, Kasetsart University

·       Mr. Tak Chiu Wong, Asia Pacific Saxophone Academy

·       Dr. Chi-hin Leung, Hong Kong Institution of Education

·       Ms Emily Koh, Boston New Music Initiative

The judges reserve the right to award citations and honorable mentions as warranted, and to combine categories when necessary. The decision of the judges is final.


The deadline of submission is 30th April 2015.

 Regulations and Submission Method

1.        The competition is open to composers of all nationalities and ages.

2.        The submitted composition(s) may have been performed but not been awarded a prize in another competition.

3.        Work(s) must be submitted in the form of PDF via the online form:

4.        Anonymous submission is required for each entry in the score.

5.        Please include the TITLE of the composition ONLY on the attachment and include both the title and the composer’s name in the application form.

6.        The score must NOT show the name of the composer anywhere.

7.        Please note that the jury will refer to the works by title only.

8.        Incomplete submissions will be disqualified.

9. A maximum of one composition per composer in each category will be reviewed. It is possible to submit applications into two separate categories.

10.    Prizes for the winning compositions for each category will be advised at later date.

11.    The winners of each category will be announced on the website of Asia Pacific Saxophone Academy on www.apsa-sax.comin mid-May.
